Anbernic RG40xxV is Coming Soon?

I think we have spent plenty of time talking about Anbernics aggressive release schedule so far this year. They seem dead set to put the H700 SOC in every low to mid tear handheld while comfortably putting the T820 in their “high end” handhelds even after initial comparisons of the RG556 vs the Retroid Pocket 4 Pro’s performance.

As we sit back and look at Anbernics traditional handheld lineup which they appear to be attempting to updating 2yrs of inventory before Christmas, there are a few more handhelds we should be expecting. There tends to be a ventricle for each horizontal and in the case of the RG35xx we have a plus, flip and horizontal respectively. I wouldn’t expect to see more flips along the way even though they have seen great success. That would be just giving it a bigger screen making it the size of a netbook (netbooks were mini laptops that were really popular for a very very short run). We should however be able to reasonably expect the RG40xxH to have a vertical counterpart. The only question we have is will it have joysticks (history would say yes).

I think the fact that the naming convention of the RG40xxH ending with an H gives away the hand that there is an expectation to be a V. In the past these letters didn’t show up in the initial release. (simplified breakdown of Anbernics naming structure) Take the RG35xx for example. Eventually they added an RG35xx Plus which was an update with WiFi along with the H700 SOC (we now have an RG35xx +/2024 even though the Plus came out first) and a couple other comforts. That was followed by the RG35xxH, RG35xx +/2024 and RG35xxSP. I can’t think of another form factor they can do with that line. I’m really trying to come up with something but I don’t think they will release a fold.

Looking at the release schedule I think it’s safe to assume having the RG40xxH release 3 days ago we should see the RG40xxV initial orders be taken sometime during the first week in August. I’m waiting for the “leaked” images of the RG40xxV to start surfacing online sometime near the end of next week. Do you think the “leaked photo” will include ramen this time instead of sake bombs spilled on a table? If the past has taught us anything pre-orders get filled for current generation and immediately we see a leak before everyone even receives their new handhelds. I do however believe the RG40xxV will be well received as the RG405V and RG353V were popular in the last generation.

Anbernic if you are listening I have a suggestion. In order to help eliminate handheld fatigue while absolutely flooding the market, staggering releases might be beneficial if for nothing more diluting the image of a cash grab. All the RG35xx handhelds releasing in order left customers constantly questing if they purchased the right device. Maybe this is intentional to get customers to keep chasing the carrot I’m uncertain. My suggestion going forward would be to alternate. Example RG35xx Plus then RG28xx followed by RG40xxH and back to RG35xxH. Or something along those lines. If the RGx05 series is planned for a refresh to RGx06 after the RG40xx’s I might start sprinkling some of those in here as well. I think it will have the same purchasing effect if not increase it as customers will feel like you are always releasing something new and making it more exciting to get the same handhelds in different form factors. I think we can safely assume an update to the RGx06 series will have the T820 SOC, you could really shake things up by giving customers a new SOC!

This is the apparent release schedule and road map for handheld releases by Anbernic in 2024. If you find yourself getting board with the constant barrage of the same handhelds performing the exact same way but playing differently depending on how you hold it I have some good news for you. First I think it’s safe to assume Anbernic will be releasing a successor line to the RG405M series of devices, secondly after that there is only a few handhelds left so if Anbernic is going to keep at this release schedule they are going to need to make at least one completely new line of handhelds soon because they will be out of devices to refresh by Halloween.

I’m going to end this with a few questions for the reader… yep bet you didn’t think I was giving you homework.

1. Do you think we are going to get an RG40xxV and when?

2. Will Anbernic release a successor to the Win600 this year?

3. Is Anbernic going to come out with a New Emulation Console (I like the PAP II and Xbox’ish one I can’t remember the name of it but I reviewed them well)

4. Open Question: what do you want to see from Anbernic?
