Powkiddy’s new RGB20 Pro is see through… sort of!
When the RGB20S was released it rapidly became a Tik-Tok sensation. Though given all types of names on social media none of which were RGB20S and often sold for twice the price of Powkiddy’s website I think it would be safe to assume this mid-low level handheld is likely one of Powkiddy’s best selling handhelds of all time.
It didn’t take long for a new company to the scene called Game Console to release a “new” handheld named R35S. There was all sorts of misdeeds in order to get this console to market and it was quickly noticed by reviewers that the SOC PCB was stamped “RGB20S”. It seems that they borrowed almost the entire RGB20S putting a transparent skin on it and marketed it as a “new” handheld for a fraction of the price. The only changes to have been made in improvements to the already popular device by an outside company. I won’t begin to pretend I understand Chinese copywriter law but after reviewers received the first batch its wasn’t long before the handheld was delisted on sites like AliExpress (though you do see them pop up from time to time now). These companies do often “barrow” each other’s intellectual property which left the industry in shock when it was removed.
This isn’t however about the R35S and instead about the generational changes to the RGB20. The soon to be released RGB20 Pro is the 4th official handheld generationally by Powkiddy in all its shapes and sizes. The last of which the RGB20SX being a vertical handheld rocking a 4”x4” 1:1 720:720 screen perfect for Gameboy, Gameboy Color, NeoGeo Pocket, the virtual game console Pico-8, etc. The RGB20SX is also a vertical of the very popular Powkiddy RGB30 with the same specs but in a horizontal form factor.
We don’t have a ton of information about the RGB20 Pro yet but we do know that it is undergoing testing right now. Normally like with Anbernic when we get these “leaks” we are normally w/in a couple weeks of the handhelds release. So here is what we know so far:
- 3.2” LCD Display
- 4:3 Aspect Ratio
- 1024×768 Resolution
- Transparent Top Layer
- 4 colors likely: Green, Blue, Yellow & White
- Dual Sticks and back shoulder buttons
Everything else right now has been kept close to the chest. That said it normally doesn’t take long for things like the SOC bring leaked. I’m going on a limb here but after the release of the Powkiddy V10 I’m guessing this will likely have the same RK3266 SOC lacking Bluetooth and WiFi. Powkiddy tipped their toes in higher end handhelds but it seems like they know they profit more from affordable quirky devices. This feels a natural fit for that in the images so far. It wasn’t much more than a year ago that the RK3266 started around $100 and the price has decreased dramatically. Powkiddy normally buys in mass then floods the market with different form-factors housing nearly the same internals. It seemed last year that they had learned that adding WiFi to their handhelds was grossly beneficial on customers satisfaction but if the V10 is any indication that extra dollar per handheld might not be worth it for them. I really hope I’m wrong and the window on the front is indeed a portal to a WiFi chip (would be funny if it isn’t actually hooked up).
Once I know a little more about this handheld that looks like it’s straight out of Cyberpunk 2077 I’ll be back to update you.
