A NEW Cube from Anbernic | RG CubeXX is almost here
It makes sense to use the RG Cube form factor and put the H700 SOC in it. Infact when the Cube came out my initial take was that’s the SOC that should have been in it to begin with to directly compete with the RGB30. I do understand they were in a battle with the ZPG A1 Unicorn but having a 1:1 on Android not allowing for native Pico-8 never made sense to me. Don’t get me wrong I like my RG Cube but I’m willing to bet I will Love the RGCubeXX even with those stupid x’s in the name.
Check it out here on Anbernic (link will update upon release)
I use my RG Cube for 3DS mostly. That and pinball games because it is great for vertical arcade titles. There won’t be any 3DS emulation on the Anbernic RGCubeXX as there isn’t an emulator that independently supports Linux. I think this is fine because as mentioned this will allow for Native Pico-8 gameplay. There is a chance through custom firmware that we get to see PortMaster being added as well.
The D-Pad has swapped with the joysticks for all the retro purists. Now we just need to cross our fingers that they have updated the joysticks to those used in the RG406V. I think it is unluckily as they will try and keep the price down to make it more competitive with the Powkiddy RGB30.
There have been many failed attempts to overtake the 1:1 space the RGB30 sits in and as of now none have been successful. If Anbernic is good at one thing it’s edging out competitors. With the RGB30 being very uncomfortable without the use of additional grips and if Anbernic keeps the original RG Cube back shell this shouldn’t be difficult. That and the H700 SOC has been proven to be a formidable workhorse when put up against the RK3566.
The Anbernic RGCubeXX should be a welcome addition to the increasingly long line of “XX” handhelds that have become their bread and butter this cycle.
Now I just need to pick a different color so I can tell my handhelds apart.
