GKD Pixel 2 is coming…

The GKD Pixel is absolutely one of if not my favorite mini/micro handheld. It has also been one of the most difficult handhelds to get ahold of since its release.

The thing that makes the Pixel unique is its premium build quality and quirky software. Without custom firmware it truly is an ‘experience’ trying to learn the stock operating system. This can be overlooked by its machine fit all metal body and buttons. Oddly the Pixel is my most pocketable retro handheld but I’m afraid to leave the house with it. It really is a thing of beauty. We know now that there is plans to release a slightly larger GKD Pixel with a larger higher resolution screen. This would make sense to why they stopped production right at the height of the Pixels popularity. If they released the Pixel with a 2.8-3.2” screen versus the 2.4” screen currently I think it would only increase the handhelds popularity. There are 4 colors it appears to be releasing in Red, Purple, Green and Gunmetal though the colors could change.

We are also seeing a rise in metal shells being put on our most loved handhelds. The most recent are these releases from MechDIY of the Metal Miyoo Mini. Making a bigger pixel would put GKD directly in competition with aftermarket metal handhelds.

The GKD Pixel 2 most recently showed up in images on the Retro Handhelds Discord. Unfortunately there hasn’t been much information to go with the images that emerged other than larger screen size. I think it should be safe to say we should expect a better SOC than the Ingenic x1830. Changing SOCs would likely allow the community to better rally around the handheld in the custom firmware space. The most popular CFW for the Pixel currently being MinUI.

I am really excited to learn more about the Pixel 2. There is definitely a space for it and we are in need of premium handhelds from some of these veteran players. This also leaves us wanting to know the price. The original GKD Pixel was right on the edge of pricing itself out of market which is likely the biggest contributor to the rarity. Unless they put some crazy SOC into the Pixel 2 GKD is going to need to keep the price below $80USD.
