The Wait for the Retroid Pocket Flip 2 almost over
Retroid’s ambitions around the Flip 2 are coming at us Fast and Furious since the announcement. They are deservedly riding high after the release of the very successful Retroid Pocket 5 and you can feel it. We are expecting even more information today 2/19/2025 at some point as well, according to screenshots of Retroid chats over on Discord.
First off, the name “Flip 2” still hasn’t been confirmed by Retroid. It might be fun to turn the internet upside down and give it a name like “OS” or one screen. That way if they do drop a dual screen rumored in some circles they would have a Flip DS. It sounds nice but unlikely. The meta data is built around Flip 2 and for a company of this size it likely would be worth taking advantage of that online following as it stands.
Update: Retroid dropped a quick video showing off the hinge where they do show the new handheld being called the Retroid Pocket Flip 2 so that settles that.
Other than the Flip 2 being a clamshell we also know it will have an OLED screen, HallEffect triggers, the same HallEffect sticks as the RP5 (inset with shorter caps) and active cooling. Hopefully the active coolIng is better than what was found on the Pocket Flip which really didn’t do anything to bring the temps down.
The renders make it appear like it will be rocking the same 5.5″ OLED display from the Retroid Pocket 5 with possibly a little more bezzle. It will be great if this screen is the one they use as it is proven. Not only would it save Retroid time but they likely have a few of these laying around.
I’m still standing behind the Flip 2 having a rotated Snapdragon 865 SOC taken from the Retroid Pocket 5 and flipped moving the sticks to the top of the handheld. They’ve had good luck with the SOC so it makes sense from an availability and cost perspective. Since the sticks were unfortunately located at the bottom of the RP5 it only makes sense if it was rotated that the sticks would be lined up on the top. Similar to the GPD Win handhelds. Only thing that makes sense for the sticks not being offset on the Flip 2 with the feedback of moving the Left stick up. Also the opposite of the RP Flip which had the sticks lined up on the bottom.

Right now Pre-Order sales from Retroid are expected to start in the first 2 weeks of March. Like I said they are very ambitious coming back from their break. We don’t know the pricing yet but if you are figuring out how much to save up based on past pricing and the addition of an OLED display it should retail between $250-$300USD. I’m hoping for $250 based on Retroids history but with all the changes in the world we also know material costs have recently gone up. The original Flip sold for $149.99USD and I can’t see Retroid raising the cost over $100.
Will the Retoid Pocket Flip 2 be different enough from the Retroid Pocket 5 or are we just looking at getting an upside down RP5 in a clamshell?
