Late Tuesday night Retroid told us what the handheld was hiding in the background of the image from the Pocket Flip 2 announcement. There will now be a Pocket Classic to look forward to as well this spring.
The Retroid Pocket Classic is a vertical handheld that depending on its specs could give the Miyoo Minu Plus and TrimUI Brick a run for their money. The Pocket Classic also had one more surprise emerge…

Hiding in the back of the reveal image I thought it was weird that the two handhelds in the back row are the same color. We learned today that’s because hiding behind the facade of the Transparent Purple Pocket Classic is a gray handheld with a 6 button layout. This brings the Retroid Pocket Classic back to its Retroid Pocket 1 roots.

Though it wasn’t called the Pocket 1 at the time there has long been rumored that Retroid would be brining back this vertical design and now they have. The biggest difference we can see from the images provided so far is the Pocket Classics lack of joystick. The Retroid Pocket had a joystick oddly located above the d-pad which really made no sense to me. Now that I think about it, it’s one of their only handheld devices that has had the joysticks on top even with handhelds like the RP5 designed to play 3D systems.

We still don’t know what chipset will be in the RPC but I think it’s safe to assume that it won’t be the Snapdragon 865 they used in their last couple of devices. If they did that I think they would have no choice but to add joysticks. Though I don’t think joysticks are necessary I do find it odd when likely going up the Ayaneo Pocket DMG, Anbernic RG40xxV or dare I say the Game Console R36S depending on SOC.
I’ll keep digging and watching for more announcements. When I find something new to share I’ll keep you posted.
