There is a new kid in town when it comes to Retro Gaming Mods and Tanq Engineering (on Instagram) takes aim at a New Retro Handheld.

Similar to Boxy Pixel, new company Tanq has a metal handheld design that is eliminating the hinge of a GBA SP style handheld. This however is a hinge removal of an Anbernic RG35xxSP device and not one from Nintendo.
I have done a couple of these with Boxy Pixel shells in the past, notably the Gameboy Macro. The GB Macro removes the hinge from a Nintendo DS Lite and makes it a single display GBA, taking advantage of the DSL’s ability to play GBA cartridges.

I’ve been waiting for mods like this to show up in the Retro Handheld space for years. Sure we have the Sugar devices in China, but we don’t see those here in the West. A machined metal shell that removes the hinge from the Anbernic RG35xxSP is exactly what we need. I didn’t say want, I said need.
I hope this is only the beginning of a trend to modifying today’s retro handhelds. It’s already special being able to play our childhood games on these handhelds and mods like this will give it a more personal touch as well.
What do you think of the Tanq SP? Is this something you would like to do?
I’ll try and figure out how to get one of these so I can make you a breakdown tutorial and assembly video for the Anbernic RG35xxSP with Tanq SP shell. Until then we can all daydream about it.
