It goes without saying but if you have a “flip” handheld in the gaming spaces it is likely there will be some hinge issues with a % of them.
Retroid ran into hinges cracking on the Flip 1 which is why many of us were surprised when they came out with the Flip 2. Retroid isn’t alone when it comes to hinge issues either.
In the last year out of the clamshell handhelds that have been released there have been hinge issues with the Miyoo Flip and Anbernic RG35xxSP. Powkiddy seems to make the hinges with the least issues as we haven’t seen many issues with the V90 or V90S.
Problem
Retroid customers started to report hairline fractures in the hinges of the Pocket Flip 2 over on Reddit which then moved to Retroid’s Discord. This created a waterfall of other users posting images of there devices as everyone myself included checked to see if they were having problems. (I use my Flip 2 Daily and so far so good).
Most of the posts so far have been Black units but it doesn’t appear to be limited to just that color, there have been images posted of other colors as well.
Fix
They must have learned their lesson after the Retroid Pocket Mini screen debacle because Retroid jumped out with a quick replacement solution. This is a welcome change for a small manufacturer to implement.
If you find yourself with a crack in your hinge you just need to email Retroid at sa***@*******id.com. They will then send you a pre-paid shipping label to return your handheld, once the handheld is scanned in as picked up by carrier it will trigger the shipping of a new device.
You should only go a couple days without a handheld as they will pass each other in the mail. This is pretty awesome.
If you have lost faith in the Retroid Pocket Flip 2 hinge you can also opt to have it replaced with a Retroid Pocket 5 instead. With the same screen and internal SOC the only difference is physical which is the hinge.
This is another great option not needed to be offered by Retroid. This is a new issue so we aren’t sure they have updated the hinge or are replacing with the same. Retroid did state that part of their QC is opening/closing the hinge 50k times daily with a machine and they haven’t had issues in that environment.
