New Ayn Thor gets 2 Good CPU Options for Android Gaming

This is turning to be the typical Ayn trickle when it comes to the New Thor and Odin 3.

Yesterday we posted about things we could deduce from the information we had about the Ayn Thor and shortly after they started trickling out more info. You can read that Ayn Thor article here.

We know now that the Ayn Thor will be accompanied by and Odin 3 handhelds so they are pulling a double feature which is fun. We also now have screen sizes for both the top and bottom screens along with 2 CPU options.

Though it was added to yesterdays article edit incase you missed it the screens on the Thor are as follows:

  • 6” AMOLED FHD 120Hz top display (not off the Odin 2 as it’s not OLED)
  • 3.92” OLED 60Hz lower display (likely the screen from the Retroid Pocket Classic/Ayaneo Pocket DMG)

For the first time since the Ayn Loki they are offering multiple CPU options. This is great for people who don’t have a need to buy a higher performance chipset but still make the handheld available to them.

When it comes to SOC choices both are good and it will depend on the level of emulation. On of the chipsets is out of the current Retroid Pocket handhelds and the other is being used in the Odin 2’s.

  • First is a Qualcomm Snapdragon SD865
    • This has proven to be a great CPU emulating up to lite Nintendo Switch titles and the ability to dual boot into Linux
  • Secondly is the Qualcomm Snapdragon SD8Gen2
    • This CPU is a workhorse able to emulate most Switch titles and also efficient with PC titles through Winlater
    • Recently got a dual-boot Linux custom firmware through RockNIX

As stated these are both great CPUs. My opinion is unless there is a $100USD difference I would recommend the SD8Gen2. Though both chipsets are work horse the SD8Gen2 is very much a next level SOC in comparison. This will proved more room for expansion as new avenues in emulation open in the years to come.

Also if you are just looking for a clamshell handheld and are looking at the SD865 you might be best off picking up the Retroid Pocket Flip 2 as most of the other components are likely to be the same/similar for less money. We won’t know for sure until the prices drop.

As always as we get more info we’ll post it here on RetroSpecd.gg. Once we get it all I intend to compile all the information together.

Ayn should start posting about these devices on their website soon. If you want to checkout there posts hit the link below.
