If you have been waiting to find out the SOC on the Ayn Odin 3 you don’t have to wait any longer.
Early this morning Ayn posted to their Odin 3 Discord feed with the CPU, Battery, Weight and Dimensions of their new handheld and they don’t disappoint.

Battery
Starting with the battery, Ayn is sticking with the 8000mAh battery from the Odin 2. I think this is a good move as the Odin 2 battery seemingly last forever compared to X86 handhelds even when doing high end emulation.
Dimensions
The Odin 3 itself is coming in at 224.7×87.5×16.6mm thin. This is pretty close to the Odin 2 in most area measuring 225x98x17mm. We are seeing the Odin 3 coming in less 10mm in width is the biggest update here, which is fantastic.
From the initial images the Odin 3 looked like a smaller Odin Portal, we have learned since its thickest point will be the built in ergonomics and its welcoming to see that they haven’t sacrificed those.

Power
Ayn has opted to go with the Snapdragon 8 Elite SOC which is crazy for a handheld. It’s hard to say how optimization will come out but SD8 Elite is used in the highest end gaming tablets.
The Snapdragon 8 Elite is a generation leap that benefits from performance boosts in both single and multi core scores. Using the Orion CPU architecture, the SD8 Elite also has fairly significant improvements in power efficiency which could definitely extend the 8000mAh batteries life.
We should also see lower latency around 0.7ms in the SD8 Elite over the SD8Gen2 with 3-4ms. If you search Reddit there is a number of posts about latency issues with the Odin 2 which should be solved here. I’m personally not affected by the SD8Gen2 latency but the Odin 3 should be drastically improved, offering a better experience for gaming.
My biggest question here is if Ayn will offer multiple CPU options for the Odin 3? We have seen Ayn do that before most recently with the Ayn Thor. We might see something like a SD8Gen3 and SD8Elite or something along those lines.

GPU
We will also see a new generation GPU with the Adreno 840. The Odin 3’s Adreno 840 offers graphical improvements to the Adreno 830 which is always welcomed.
There is one kinda major downfall with the Adreno 840 that will likely be fixed in the future however… a lack of driver support. The driver support has been what has made the SD8Gen2 and even the less power SD865 emulation workhorses today.
It’s likely we will see drivers support in the future, but at launch this could be painful especially for Odin 2 owners. There will be cases where anything above PS2 emulation will be better emulated on the Odin 2.
Pricing
There haven’t been any updates from Ayn that include pricing. It is possible they are waiting to see what the Ayaneo Konkr Pocket Fit prices out at, especially after Ayaneo teased an 8 Elite SOC option last week.
Ayn has always tried to be a high quality affordable handheld manufacturer and stay with relatively stable pricing. I would assume Ayn will make a slight price increase on the Odin 3. With the mid level Odin 2 coming in at $339 (list $439) I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Odin 3 Pro go for $400 (list $500).
Ayn likely has around $200 to play with in keeping it less than the Konkr Pocket Fit (Pocket Fit pricing hasn’t been released yet). It probably doesn’t matter much what either costs as they each have solid built in fan bases.

Release
With Ayn’s typical drip schedule we should definitely have pricing if not pre-sale by the end of the week. With it being a holiday in the US it’s hard to say how/if Ayn will take that into consideration.
I know for a lot of people they can’t see this released soon enough. Though the Odin 2 is still an absolutely amazing handheld today, it’s been nearly 2 years since it was released. I for one can’t wait to see what we get out of the additional HP under the hood.
Love to know your thoughts on the Ayn Odin 3? How do you think pricing is going to look?
Once I have more I’ll update you here on RetroSpecd.gg!!
