Anbernic in past years has seen success in flipping their popular horizontal handhelds vertical… but will it work this time?
I am a fan of the Anbernic RG405V as well as the RG406V, but for some reason the RG477V feels different. This new handheld will be borrowing the internals of the popular RG477M but in a plastic vertical handheld design.

Design
This is the formula Anbernic has used the past 2 years but they seem to be addressing this iteration a little differently. Instead of using the design philosophy of its predecessors the RG477V will be ditching ergonomics for a design more closely aligned with the popular RG353V.
This will include a flatter back, less accessible rear shoulder buttons and a thinner profile. The profile of the RG405V and RG406V are a bit too tick for the average pockets so they could be onto something here. Anbernic is also ditching the premium metal body in favor of plastic and the glass front from the RG476H making the handheld lighter.

What’s New
That being said part of what has made these past versions so great is the comfort they bring to the vertical handheld space along with the power to compliment it. The new RG477V will be the most powerful version yet using the Dimensity D8300 SOC from the RG477M.
Outside of the D8300 it appears to be borrowing all other components of the RG477M including that beautiful 4.7” LTPS 120Hz display. We should also expect to see 8GB LPDDR4X RAM, 128GB Storage and HallEffect Joysticks.

Thoughts
All around a great package so why is it catching heat? That is a question I’ve been trying to answer.
Initially I was thinking it had to do with the D8300 SOC in a landscape that is obsessed with Snapdragon SOCs, often for good reason. The Snapgradon chipsets often allow for better emulation thanks to their Adreno GPUs receiving continued driver support that brings more robust emulation to the table.
The thing here after owning the Retroid Pocket Classic I struggle to see is why that driver support is so important where we have a more than capable SOC for vertical systems. I think we might be missing the point here a bit if we think this handheld is designed for emulating Nintendo Switch games.
Sure some of these higher end systems will play well on the RG477V, but as a vertical it truly is a Retro Handheld in most every way. If you are looking for a powerful vertical for your pocket this should check nearly every box. Its biggest problem with pocketability is going to be its size due to that 4.7” display.
After using the previous versions I’m excited to see what this handheld can do. Honestly it’s going to be overpowered which should at minimum allow some fun upscaling options.
What do you think about the Anbernic RG477V? Will you be picking it up?
I’ll be grabbing this once it’s available for review. If you want to check it out sooner click the link below as Anbernic should be placing it on their blog shortly. The info we have also tells us orders will begin soon.
