The Zero F’s Sony has for their fans is beyond evident in the letters they are sending out. It shows how out of touch Sony is within an industry they currently lead.
Polygon posted section of Sony’s reminder that you purchase a license to play games when Sony says it’s ok, not to purchase the games themselves. The email is mostly highlighting the Terms of Service that’s too long for average human to read.
It’s interesting that they have listed their software as “non-transferable” after the trolling XBOX commercials that accompanied the PS4 release.
Not only is Sony removing physical media in January 2028, they also want to make sure you know you own nothing with them. They have taken this owning nothing to also mean no matter how much you invest in them they owe you nothing.
Sony reserves the right to take away your “purchases” any time for any reason they see fit. Recently they pulled over 500 movies purchased on their network with no apology and no compensation to those who’s content they took away.
Going into the PS4 generation I was the biggest Sony Pony [Sony Fanboy]. Luckily life took over my time spent gaming, but I still have 4 PS4’s and a PS4 Pro for my annual Call of Duty release week party [also ended near the begging of the generation].
I did pickup a PS5 Pro and PS Portal this generation, both of which collect dust on their respective shelves. I’ve also taken to only buying physical games if they aren’t available on PC which is where I would prefer to play them.
Sony seems to be following the XBOX One playbook while failing even more spectacularly. I’m just waiting for one of the executives at Sony to mention TV while talking about the upcoming PS6.
I think it’s time gamers remind Sony that Piracy is a service issue. If you take away ownership through physical media and in turn replace it with digital media you can take away at any moment for no reason, don’t be surprised if gamers find a way to “own” their games outside your approved methods.
