It’s immediately obvious to see the impact the Miyoo Mini Plus has left on the Retro Handheld Scene, will the Miyoo Mini Plus leave that same impact?
The Miyoo Mini Plus was one of the first retro handhelds myself and much of the community rallies around. With OnionOS the Miyoo devices became some of the most popular in the space.
It wasn’t because Miyoo had superior build quality but instead the experience you got with the handheld in your pocket. Infact it’s not hard to argue that Miyoo had inferior quality in comparison to their competitors.
Miyoo Mini Plus V2
The Miyoo Mini Plus may look the same on the surface, but the similarities really stop there.
Coming equipped with the Rockchip RK3562 CPU over the older SigmaStar SSD202D CPU there should be a considerable power increase. This should allow for not only more emulation but also the ability to upscale and use custom shaders like never before.
Oddly Miyoo is sticking with 128MB DDR3 RAM [I really hope this is a typo] even with this new SOC. It makes me think they aren’t actually trying to make it more powerful but instead maybe can’t get ahold of the current SOC and introducing an alternative.
We should also see a rumored Miyoo Flip V3 with this same SOC setup soon.
Another big change will be the lack of OnionOS. The Onion team really made the Miyoo Mini Plus the handheld we know today. When it comes to retro handhelds OnionOS type performance and compatibility is the goal on lower-powered devices.
Unfortunately OnionOS won’t be able to be ported to the RK3562 supported Plus V2. We may see a SpruceOS variant based on OnionOS like we did on the Miyoo A30 which would be welcome and was started from a member of the Onion team.
We should expect Miyoo to use the same display, shells, colors [translucent purple, white and retro gray and translucent black], 3000mAh battery, and controls. Where we might see a noticeable in hand differences is the 200g weight over the originals 162g.
Thoughts
It’s exciting to see Miyoo updating the Mini Plus, but I’m not sure what they are thinking sticking to 128MB of RAM. Even though the RK3562 can emulate Dreamcast and PSP, more RAM would be nice for increased performance on its current systems.
I’ll probably crab one of these to run some testing, if you have interest in a comparison video let me know. Currently the Miyoo Mini Plus V2 can be pre-ordered from GoGameGeek. I’m waiting to hear back from other resellers to see if we can get you a discount.
Are you excited for this refresh and the release of the Miyoo MininPlus V2?
I’ll keep you updated as info comes out.
