LG Snowflake

Move over Powkiddy RGB30 and LG Snowflake there is a New handheld coming to rain on your 1:1 parades. This all began with a “sneak peak” image of the Anbernic Cube screen online.

Anbernic Cube

That was all it took to create a tornado of speculation around the upcoming Anbernic handheld. Let’s start off by what we think we know so far based off current rumors surrounding the Anbernic Cube.

The Anbernic Cube is believed to be supported by the same Unisoc T820 currently found in Anbernic’s flagship RG556 that came out a few months ago. If this is indeed the case that would this tells us that it is running on an Android Operating system. This likely would not be a dual boot system we see in a large portion of Anbernic’s other devices. The reasoning behind this is the lack of support around the Unisoc SoC. To my knowledge we haven’t seen anyone successfully dual boot this chipset in any type of mass implementation. This chipset is also rumored to have memory in an 8+128 configuration.

Moving to the screen there is some on both sides of the fence estimating that the 4″ 1:1 screen will be either 480×480 or 720×720. I think if you look at the competition it is most likley to be a 720p screen. I also think if they can find a screen that is OLED in a 4″x4″ configuration they will be installing it into the handheld. I am having a difficulty however even finding a screen for a GBC that isn’t 4:3 or 10:9 less OLED at that.

Anbernic “CUBE” in the wild

By the barly look at the image of the screen that was shared the hanheld appears to be equiped with the DPad from the Anbernic ARC reminiscent of the SEGA Saturn. The ARC DPad was well made and it would be a shame to see that being the only device it is put on.

It is said to have Hall effect joysticks, this would be great news from any other manufacturer but Anbernic doesn’t have the greatest track record when it comes to Hall effect joysticks. I typically replace these with GuiliKit hall sticks in all ,y devices. So as great of an addition this is just keep in mind that all halleffect sticks aren’t created equally.

There are some rumors around Hall effect triggers. I’m not exactly sure how this is going to work seeing as they appear to be inline. I’m interested either way to in the hopes they aren’t using the loud micro switches found in some of their most recent devices.

There is a lot of this that makes sense. If they are competing with the Snowflake and the Unicorn most these specs lineup. Between the looks and possible performance other than form factor I don’t see this digging much into the Powkiddy market share. Likely the “Cube” in my opinion mind you this is completely speculative will be around $199. I’m partly basing this price off Anbernics current flagship device the RG556. If it is going to have a lot of the same components one would assume the pricing would be similar. Also with the competition pricing out there sub $200 would make sense, however Anbernic also is known for over pricing their devices in comparison to competitors often. This could easily go up in price if the images we are seeing that look metal come to fruition. The is an Anbernic and we do know how much they love making their flagship devices out of metal.

As more information becomes available I’ll be here for it and try and keep you updated.

Are you excited for the Anbernic “CUBE”? If so what excites you the most?
