I can’t remember a time when I was posting about a single new product announcement realtime when I wasn’t sitting in some sort of developer conference. But here I a, again to update what we know about the Ayn Odin2 mini. If you would like to go back to any of thr previous posts I’ll list them here:
Ayn is launching a new device dubbed the “320g” and it looks gorgeous!
Now we have everything about the new handheld except for the price. There is possibly a theory we can visit there as well. But let’s first talk the specs.
Using the same processor and a smaller battery are both weight and cost savers. The screen is obviously smaller at 5”’s with a Mini LED which will be cheaper than if they had gone with AMOLED. It also explains losing about 25% of the weight. If this new handheld performs like the Odin2 does now it will likely be the best pocketable device that can power through the PS2 and Switch library’s and still fit comfortably in your pocket. So it’s really everything every Retroid Pocket 4 Pro owner wished their handheld was… myself included.
Seeing as I’ve been wrong about nearly all my assumptions so far I think it’s only fitting I come up with a theory on how this will be priced.
For reasons unknown to me AYN never raised the pricing of the Odin2 beyond the early bird offering. This is great for consumers but with almost the same specs creates challenges around what the pricing will be. There is a couple ways we can do this but I still don’t think they will position the AYN Odin2 Mini in a way that hurts the sales of the RP4 Pro. Knowing AYN said they don’t intend to compete with the Odin2 I wouldn’t be surprised if they made the two handhelds the same price. This would prevent them from ruining the RP4 Pro sales and allow them continued growth of the Odin2 Pro.
The Odin2 Mini becomes a device of convenience while lowering production costs and making a more competitive device to the convenience market. This also would make the Odin2 even more valuable as getting the bigger handheld with extended battery and superior ergonomics for the same price separates the two devices arguably into different categories. They might also move away from early bird pricing on the Odin2 but selling the Odin2 mini for $50+ more than the RP4 Pro likely will give them that level of separation they are looking for as it’s the same separation they have today.
Lastly I do believe this will be released mid-late summer as we are getting all our questions answered and that doesn’t normally happen prior to a launch date decision.
