Is Retroid Pocket 4 Pro the Best Retro Handheld? | Honest Review
Let talk Retroid Pocket 4/4 Pro
The Retroid Pocket 4 Pro is coming in as one of the best price to performance devices so far in 2024. With the ability to play everything from old dos games to some light Nintendo Switch you don’t run out of run Retro and Current titles to chose from.
Like the Odin 2 Pro the RP4Pro are limited somewhat by the software currently available for emulation and would have fared better with a Snapdragon processor of some sort on the hardware end. There is just so much support out there within emulators for Snapdragon processors that really doesn’t exist for the little known Dimensity 1100. That’s not to say some developer wont get a bug and start making add-ons for emulators using Dimensity chips but I don’t make recommendations on what might be some day even when there is a developer out there promising they will build it (these developers are working for free, get far too little credit and work on there own time so there is rightly no accountability for them to say F it and move onto a project that they are more excited about… in fact I would encourage that because whatever it is will be far better).
The RP4 does well for what it is. Like I stated before it has good value and it’s hard to find something that fits in your pocket that is so impressive for gaming. There is a few shortcomings as there is in everything made by man. First off they have a massive problem with their shoulder buttons. This was known before the first batch of pre-orders was fully delivered and a fix was implemented immediately (they warranty the triggers for 2 years and fix them by sending you an entire back shell with updated triggers pre-installed). I was sitting at home thinking about writing this article but thought maybe I would play some Salt vs Sanctuary during the “Big Game” when about 5 minutes into playing my R2 button failed. Now looking back to when I was playing Duke Nukem last night and couldn’t figure out why my weapons were auto switching it was likely already starting to fail. There is also the aforementioned issue of using a Dimensity chip that other than the RP4 Pro has only been used on one phone as of this writing and there isn’t any support for on the cfw side of things. Lastly it would have been nice that instead of using software to wash out the screen due to them having a green hugh they would have sourced a new screen because they amount of brightness they had to steel from it to get rid of the green takes away from its pre-launch review unit vibrantness,
All in I think it would be tough to beat the RP4 Pro for the money. It’s equipped with the a better chip than the Odin Lie for the same price. If you really liked the performance of the Odin Lite you can get the RP4 non-pro for $149 or $50 less than the Odin Lite with the same Dimesity 900 chipset. As I write this I realise how confusing this world can get sometimes. If I were spending the money the RP4 isn’t a big enough leap from the RP3+ but the RP4 Pro is more than worth it. Well unless this campaign is treated like the RP3 release and the RP4 Pro+ is revealed before all the original pre-orders are filled!
