Miyoo Flip getting New Hinge Update?

The long awaited Miyoo Flip has finally gone on sale in limited quantities. Die hard Miyoo fans have already started receiving the Flip while others watch for available inventory (links below).

If you are into Retro Handhelds you may have noticed some of your favorite creators, myself included have not received and reviewed the Flip yet. Those who have received the initial batch (most got lucky purchasing in the Miyoo lottery) are about 50/50 on if their flip hinge is working as expected. We might see an update on this soon.

If Miyoo is consistent with one thing across all their handhelds it’s listening to their fans and making adjustments along the way. The original v1 Miyoo Mini seems sell to this day like a collector item, New for 4X retail around $220. Miyoo struggled to get inventory of that screen and eventually gave up trying, releasing with a new v2 screen. Eventually they had problems getting inventory of that screen as well and moved onto another. They even brought back the popular ice blue colorway from the 1st version and added yellow as an option when they got to today’s Miyoo Mini V4.

Finally the Miyoo with the Miyoo Mini v4 and Miyoo Mini Plus seem to have inventory under control freeing up buyers time from following the Miyoo inventory watch. Well at least for those handhelds. The Miyoo A30 can still be a struggle at times and has seen some quiet updates between batch releases. Yes the A30 still gets warm but what do you expect putting all those electronics and screen into a micro handheld?

As the first batch of Miyoo Flips depletes there might be a good reason that we haven’t seen consistent replenishment. First they seem to assemble one color at a time which is why there is only one color available at a time. But more importantly it appears there are hinge and software updates being worked out. I think most will put custom firmware on the Flip so that update isn’t as important. Also rumor has it the OnionOS team received the device early and are plugging away at a Firmware release in the coming months. We all hoped for OnionOS on the A30 but SpruceOS does a good job filling that void.

More important however would be a hinge update. It’s hard to imagine after a year of delays rumored to be because they were trying to get the hinge right it was released in the shape it is in a handful of handhelds. This could easily be a QC issue they are working through. That aside however it seems review units have been delayed until after the Spring Festival in China. I wouldn’t expect them to ship before the end of February. The reasoning for this delay however is what makes it interesting.

Word is that units to reviewers have been delayed for ‘the supplier to optimize the Flip particularly focusing on the hinge mechanism’ -paraphrased. This is some welcome news even if it comes down to something as simple as tackling a QC issue causing some to have what appear to be over tightened hinges. I’m guessing they are over tightened based on videos I’ve seen, I haven’t had the Flip in my hands or tried fixing the issue yet. The isn’t an uncommon issue with electronics that include folding hinges which is what my assumption is based on.

It took Miyoo over a year of testing to get the hinge they have today so they must have been happy with it. They had to have given up on being first to market when Anbernic released the RG35xxSP nearly a year ago. There was no reason to rush at this point. I also can’t imagine after getting everything nailed down they suddenly have a new hinge design that will be better (unless it came down to deciding between a couple options).

We are going to have to wait and see what happens. I definitely have FOMO tword the people who have already received the Miyoo Flip. Good hinge or not.

I for one am still as excited for the Miyoo Flip as I have ever been… with or without a hinge update. Once I get more information I’ll keep you updated.
