Retroid G2 Gets Early Retirement [Maybe]

Retroid G2 Gets Early Retirement [Maybe]

If you have been looking at picking up the Retroid Pocket G2 you will need to do it quickly.

Chris from Retroid announced on the Retroid Discord last night that the Pocket G2 will be going into retirement… temporarily. He also stated that the Retroid Pocket 5 and Pocket 6 will still be available.

RAM Shortage

This all after the recent removal of the 12GB Retroid Pocket 6 model. All of these devices are falling victim to the RAM-pocalypse sparked by the AI boom [not sure if boom is the correct descriptor].

I’m a big fan of the G2 from a performance and affordability stance. It really is a much faster version of the Retroid Pocket 5.

When the Retroid Pocket G2 was released it seemed like it might be a short lived incremental device as the Retroid Pocket 6 was announced at the same time. The RP6 being more powerful and only $20ish more wasn’t able to make the Christmas shopping holiday giving the G2 an early push.

One of my favorite things about the G2 is for customers upgrading from the RP5. All the accessories including the TPU cases and dual-screen attachment fit perfectly.

This gives gamers an option not requiring them to purchase all their accessories again. I think this offsets the handheld in widening the gap with the RP6.

Thoughts

I hate to be the one to bring the bad news but I don’t think we will see the Retroid Pocket G2 come back to market. It’s getting difficult for these small manufacturers to carry multiple active skus.

With the RP6 out now I would assume it is getting the majority of sales over the G2. Now Retroid will be able to open production for whatever they are cooking up next.

One positive here for current Retroid Pocket G2 owners, it will still be receiving a firmware update next week. That tells us even though the Pocket G2 is being retired support is continuing for the handheld.

If anything changes like the Pocket G2 coming out of retirement we’ll keep you posted.
