I don’t want to start this article out with “I told you so” so instead…. Guess what Anbernic is getting ready to release?
Anbernic not one to be left behind had a “leak” today of their upcoming RG DS. I personally liked the naming as Pocket DSi but whoever builds it gets to name it I guess.
Let me just add that Anbernic hasn’t made any type of official announcement as per normal with “leaks” on every product they have ever sold.
The Anbernic RG DS does appear to be strikingly similar looking to the Nintendo DS Lite prior to them adding weird 3D effects that gave almost everyone headaches. The similarities don’t seem to stop there either.

Possible Features
It looks like the RG DS again assuming these images are real will have dual screens matching in size. This makes sense if they are sticking with the DS Lite/DSi vibe.
There appears to also be dual front facing speakers located near the top side display. The joysticks look to be the sticks used in the RG Slide, this would allow them to be recessed when closing the handheld.
Speaking of joysticks this is a DPad centric handheld with the sticks located under the DPad. This is the same for the face buttons on the right side.
For other buttons Start/Select and Back/Home are located in either side of the lower display. You then have Power and Vol+/Vol- on the right hand side of the handheld.
As far as the OS goes the RG DS looks to be running a version of Android. I think that only makes sense after the apps have been updated to accommodate dual-screen on the Ayn Thor and Ayaneo Pocket DS.

Power
I’ve been blowing up the images trying to figure out exactly what the RS DS has for a processor, which you can’t see in the translucent images either. I would really like to see them pull this off with an H700 to drive the cost down, but I think it’s safe to say that won’t be the move here.
I’m assuming based on the demo videos for there last couple T820 devices being tested with dual screens that that will be the winner. The T820 has been a solid performer for Anbernic and also being used on this years mid-level devices.
Or it could easily be something completely different. Anbernic is due to introduce a new SOC any day now and maybe now is there chance.

Thoughts
The rumors around an Anbernic RS DS have been flowing for roughly a year now, I think the first mention was around Halloween last year. With that being said Anbernic has had plenty of time to perfect their hinge and have released a couple flip GBA SP style handhelds along the way.
I truly would expect a T820 or something similar as I think Anbernic needs to keep the cost down to stay competitive. Anything less you run into video splitting issues and possibly not enough HP to sync the images.
I know I’m going to get questions around a price estimate but until we know more that is going to be difficult. The good news is we shouldn’t be left waiting long. [update: rumor has it the Anbernic RG DS has a sub $100 goal price]
This Anbernic RG DS if real should go on sale in the next 2-3 weeks if they stick to their failsafe leak to release schedule.
I think if you have been waiting it out for a company to release a DS Lite style emulator your wait is almost over. But I do have to question as to the why behind the wait, not because it’s cool but because NDS handhelds are cheap and can already be used for emulation?
As always once I have more info I’ll keep you updated.
