I’m Shocked: Anbernic RG “Slide” is Real!!

Anbernic is about to bring back the PSP Go Nostalgia!

There has been a rumored slide handheld from Anbernic for a while now. They even had some draft images circulating that someone was able to 3D render.

It almost seemed too good to be true. We haven’t seen much for “slide” devices in the gaming handheld space as a whole less the emulation handheld space.

Timing

It sounds like patents for the Sony Xperia are set to expire in June. Let’s be honest this Anbernic Slide looks like it is using a similar mechanism. I can see this releasing right as that patent expires.

Specs

Though Anbernic has only released a 17sec teaser so far it is always fun to try and guess specs. Anbernic has seemed hesitant to join the Qualcomm SOC space thus far so the safe bet is the Dimensity 8300. That would give them an SOC already designed for mobile, that they are already using and that is powerful enough for most PS2 and GameCube along with some WiiU emulation.

The other burning question is going to be the screen. Is it an OLED? They are all the rage but I’ll tell you there are some extremely impressive LCD displays rolling off the lines right now. I wouldn’t expect this to have VRR but if it did LCD would be the only way to keep the costs down.

The screen from the short video also looks to be around 5”-5.5”’s. If I only knew how big the hands of the model showing it are, we would have a better idea.

Pricing

One of the biggest drivers of success in the Retro Emulation space is pricing. Just ask the R36S. Normally it isn’t too hard to lock down Anbernic pricing plus or minus $20, but this year has been all over the place.

When they Released the RG557 at $249.99 that is nearly a hundred dollars more than last years RG556. But then the RG34xxSP just released for $66.99 which is on track with the RG35xxSP. If this handheld is using the SOC mentioned above I would imagine Anbernic will release this around $300. I can’t see this selling for less than the for mentioned RG557.

But there is so many variables, don’t get out your pitchforks just yet. The screen is going to be a big factor along with the SOC. Anbernic tends to absorb a lot of R&D costs for their handhelds, though with this being a completely new mechanism we might see some spill over here as well.

Once we get some more details I’ll give you a more fact based estimate on cost. Right now I’m sticking with $300 +/- $40. Anything after that gets into Odin 2 and “just get a Steam Deck bro” territory. Though neither of them have a fancy sliding screen.

We don’t know

We have very little to work with based off the 17sec video Anbernic posted to their YouTube. They did a pretty good job showing us proof of life without revealing if it has all its appendages. They don’t show the screen, face buttons or anything else but the back really. Most of my information is coming from the now verified renders that have been floating around. But that cheesecake in the video sure did look good.

Anbernic typically releases more info on their blog shorty after a teaser trailer. You can access the Anbernic Blog Here.
