New DSpi: Dual-Screen Gaming Handheld Runs on Linux

We have been asking for someone to come out with a Linux Dual-Screen to position next to the recently pre-released Android Handhelds…

Reddit user r/True_Shock5764 has done just that. The user has also been cool enough to open source the project and leave the DSpi files on GitHub for anyone looking to take on this challenge. If you don’t have a 3D printer you should be able to get one of the 3D printing companies to make the parts happen for you.

So what does the DSpi have under the hood? For starters the DSpi is rocking the Raspberry Pi Compute Module 5 SOC with the Linux Rasbain OS build. They are also using MelonDS to get those DS games to take advantage of the Dual-Screens.

The displays themselves are 2 800×480 IPS with touchscreens IPS’s and they packed audio in as well. The 2 speakers are using MAX98357 amplifiers, while the headphones are using the PAM8908 Headphone AMP.

You will also get 8GB of RAM for the Pi CM5 and a 5000mAh battery for hours of gameplay. This should be plenty of power to play mid level emulation with few problems.

I for one am super interested in this project. I’m finding it to be pretty cool. Talk about good timing as the Android dual-screens have started coming out.

r/True_Shock5764 has a post about the project update up on the SBCGaming Reddit thread you can find here. I can’t wait to see if there are any additional iterations to this project now that the files are open source.

What do you think about the DSpi?
