New Linux Support Coming for Ayn Handhelds?

Linux is all the rage in handheld gaming right now so it makes sense that there is a push to bring more availability to x86 handhelds.

This isn’t new for Ayn and their Odin lineup, but it is to Loki. In fact the original Odin with the SD845 SOC received both Linux and Windows 11 support via dual-boot. This was thanks to the SOC previously being used my Microsoft for one of their many failed mobile Windows projects.

Who

According to Phoronix one of the developers responsible for leading the work on the Lenovo Legion Go S Linux improvements has taken on the Ayn Loki Platform. That developers name is Derek Clark and he appears to have found an opening in the Ayn-EC driver designed for the Loki and TecToy Zeenix (repackaged and resold Loki) handheld devices.

The Ayn Loki that used the driver is powered by a Ryzen 5 6600U and has RDNA2 graphics.

Progress

This project is starting to get some legs under it. Though the progress may not seem to be impressive to the uninitiated, they are starting to see results.

Right now Derek has been able to use the platform driver to control fans under Linux along with setting custom fan curves. They have also been able to succeed with temperature monitoring via the hardware subsystem and use RGB lighting controls for the device.

Where

If you want to follow along with the project to support Linux on Ayn devices ************************************@***il.com/” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>click here to be linked to the initial patch for ‘ayn-ec‘ driver that is currently under review. This patch will eventually be added to the mainline kernel as progress continues.

I’m a Ayn fanboy and will be watching this closely. As more progress is made I’ll keep you updated along the way.
