It was a matter of time before someone from the community made a game about the Retro Handheld hobby and I’m here for it. For a group filled with developers and programmers alike I am mostly surprised it took this long. I had even thought about doing this at one point but those college programming courses I took on Windows 98 are apparently not relevant anymore.
Thanks to Writer/Developer/Director Paul M and Music from Mr. V we have a fun little game in Retro Handheld Simulator with some good attention to detail. The game takes place in the home of a Retro Handheld collector who lives in his moms basement with a pile of empty handheld boxes similar to my own in the corner of his bedroom. If I didn’t see the irony I might feel personally attacked.

The game progresses time so going back to things will often give you different results in this choose your own adventure game. Different selections can earn you extra XP and things like forgetting to get a snack/drink prior to watching a Retro Game Corps video on YouTube will cause you to lose XP. I don’t want to give too much away and I honestly haven’t been able to touch grass yet.
The game can be downloaded on itch.io at this link and downloaded in a couple of different formats for Gameboy. One format specifically for the Analog Pocket and another is a .zip file with a .gb file inside of it. Most emulators will play compressed files though most don’t read .zip files. You can extract the file and place the .gb file into your GB Rom folder, as most Gameboy games the file size is a massive 31.8KB. If you want to keep it compressed like the rest of your library, I was able to convert the .zip to a .7z and placed it in the ROM folder on my TrimUI Brick without any issues.
This isn’t a very long game from what I gather by the explanation, but if you are into Retro Handhelds I think it is worth a try. The developer is currently giving Retro Handheld Simulator away for free at the itch.io link above with the option to give him some money if you are a kind hearted person (or not feeling broke today…I get it). Maybe if he collects enough money he will expand the game (wishful thinking).
Time for me to jump back in the game. I just found a micro SD card under my mattress before my mom found it. Now off to the post office to figure out where my AliExpress package is.
