Powkiddy RGB10 Max 3 ships with newly unsupported JelOS firmware

For once it seems there is an issue with a Powkiddy handhelds firmware that’s not Powkiddy’s fault. As customers start reviving their handhelds from pre-order in the following weeks they are to be delivered with JelOS.

JelOS is a highly regarded Linux based firmware that is revered among retro handheld enthusiasts for its innovation and reliability. The problem is the developers seem to have been spooked after the Nintendo vs Yuzu/Citra lawsuit and decided to drop all RK3566 support (the chipset that comes in the RGB10Max3) amongst other chipsets. They state that they will continue to support devices that the developers themselves use and they also won’t be providing software for handheld manufacturers going forward. That last statement is going to leave Powkiddy scrambling to find someone else in the open source market to write firmware for their devices or they might have to do it themselves.

JelOS spooked by Nintendo Yuzu lawsuit

I am assuming that the move is going to be to ArkOS. Another popular firmware amongst retro gamers. The current issue is there isn’t currently support specifically for the RGB10Max3. Though they do support other RK3566 devices.

It’s not time for complete panic however as there is to be a JelOS update shortly that will include a final update for previously supported devices.

I have already begun testing ways to install other firmwares until a development team gives the RGB10Max3 an unofficial home. Once I find a stable solution I’ll post instructions on how to update your device so check back for that. I for one will be excited if I don’t have to log back into my WiFi every time I turn on the device like I do in its current state. If you happen to be one of the lucky people to have received one before there is a fix these things normally work themselves out fairly quickly.

    1. The RGB30 will no longer be supported. The only manufacturer that JelOS worked with directly was Powkiddy and they stated dropping direct manufacturer support. That being said other options will appear. Devs for a couple other OS options are already working on the RGB30 prior to this so you should have some great options.

    2. I have an update for you. JELOS has split these handhelds off to a new Operating System called ROCKNIX. Strange name but it stands for the Rockchips that are in them. That being said you will either be able to update it OTA but if that doesn’t work you can get the update on their new github page which also explains it better than I have here. https://github.com/ROCKNIX/distribution/releases/tag/20240329 . On a side not a lot of people have told me they have switched to ArkOS. This is another OS that comes on a lot of current devices and is very feature rich. It is another fork of the same system that JELOS was born from. Hope this helps
