Affordable 7″ Retro Gaming Handheld| SJGAM M27

Let’s be honest, those of us who grew-up with the games and consoles that are now considered “Retro” likely have eyes that are starting to get a little tired.

SJGAM’s Newest release looks like it could be a hit for Retro Handheld gamers looking for a large screen to give their eyes some relief. The new M27 by SJGAM comes with a massive 7″ 1024×600 display. I know you are thinking that’s not pocketable… and you would mostly be correct. But when there’s a will there’s a way.

The beauty is the M27 isn’t real thick for how big the screen is. There is a sacrifice that comes with that as it only has a 4000mAh battery however. Some of that can be made up for with the efficiency of the M27’s SOC.

The actual CPU isn’t in the listing but it does have a quad-core Cortex-A55 with a Mali-G52 GPU. The Cortex-A55 can be found in the likes of the RK3566, T610 and a couple other CPUs found in the mobile space.

Its safe to assume that the M27 is using an RK3566, but it also states it being 1.6GHz. If the M27 does use this SOC it is being underclocked as we normally see it pushing 1.8GHZ. I always find it frustrating when they don’t tell us for sure.

SJGAM has listed the M27 as playing up to PS1 which I also find odd as that SOC will play some lite PSP, N64 and Dreamcast. Seems like they might be selling themselves short, especially since in the past they have advertised handhelds playing systems they can barely touch.

Some other things we know about the M27; there is HDMI out, 1 TF expansion, 3.5mm audio, USBC Charging, RGB, etc. It also looks like it is using the Vita style joysticks off the TrimUI Smart Pro which is unfortunate for a handheld of this size. It really does make it feel like they want you to be able to put it in your pocket.

I’m actually really excited for this release. I’ve reviewed nearly every device SJGAM has released since the original M17. Some devices are better than others but it’s nice to see a company trying new things. SJGAM has released everything from HDMI plug and play stick emulators to PS Portal emulation clones. Then there is a bunch of pretty normal handhelds in-between.

I’m a fan of the M18 which is a massive 5″ vertical handheld as well as their favorite handheld of mine from their line being the M19. If you think you know the order their handhelds were released your wrong. It’s random and yet numeric which can be confusing.

I reached out to SJGAM to see if they would supply a unit to give you a more hands on review. I’ve picked up all their past devices on my own so there is a good chance I’ll go that route if warranted to get you the goods. I also just really want to play on this beast.
