In the world of handheld emulators there is often a perception of class when you are able to purchase a Metal model.
TrimUI goes all in on their popular EDC device, (definitely my EDC handheld) the Brick as it gets a new shell and a new name. The New Metal TrimUI Brick is now the Hammer.
Focus
There had been a couple of concerns prior to release that we attempted to address in the review. The most common questions we received were around weight and heat.
There is an expectation that metal handhelds get hot and the TrimUI Brick already gets hot with its CPU sandwiched between the display and a metal plate. It is also going to an Aluminum shell which sparked questions around weight on top of heat.
Because I’ve looked at the Brick in lot of different forms I tackled these questions directly. Below you will find the video if you are interested.
The TrimUI Brick is a little heavier as expected and also as expected the overall body of the Hammer does get slightly warmer.
Temp
As I had stated previously I suspected that the metal body would better spread the heat throughout the device instead of an individual metal plate on the back. This is what was found in testing. The body raised a couple degrees Celsius while the hotspot on the device became cooler than a traditional plastic bodied Brick. The heat is spread throughout the handheld helping cool the traditional hot spot.
Weight
The Hammer is a little heavier than the Brick if that wasn’t obvious based on the materials used. As you will be able to see in our testing the weight difference isn’t nearly as much as other metal variants of a similar size. Also keeping with plastic buttons assisted in shedding some weight and helping to keep the handheld quiet during the shake test.

Conclusion
The Hammer is slightly warmer and heavier than the Brick, of course. But the weight is minimal and the metal body doesn’t just look and feel nice but it also helps cool down the handhelds hotspot by spreading the warmth throughout the entirety of the device.
I believe these are some worth while upgrades. The TrimUI Hammer turned out to be everything it promised to be. It brings this slick EDC Retro Handheld the elegance it deserves.
The Hammer will definitely get people asking questions when they see you playing it.
